As a French MA (Hons) student, you'll refine your language and communication abilities to an advanced level by exploring French and Francophone linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The program offers opportunities to investigate various research-focused specialties, spanning medieval to contemporary literature and culture, French political studies, performance arts, intellectual history, postcolonial theories, gender studies, film adaptations, modern French philosophy, creative writing, and translation studies. This four or five-year program, administered by the School of Modern Languages, begins with foundational French skill development and broad cultural exploration during the first two years, enhancing abilities in critical analysis, oral communication, composition, and translation. First-year students must select two supplementary subjects alongside French, typically continuing with at least one into the second year. The third year presents optional international study opportunities at French partner universities, which can substitute for St Andrews coursework. Alternatively, students may opt for an integrated year abroad before completing two Honours years.
