The MA (Hons) in Film Studies provides an in-depth exploration of worldwide cinematic traditions. By investigating the cultural, industrial, and institutional frameworks of international film, along with analytical, historical, political, and phenomenological perspectives in film scholarship, graduates acquire a robust and contemporary academic skillset. Participants critically analyze cinema's evolution and related media forms across artistic, documentary, and alternative formats, spanning from early visual experiments to digital innovations, covering subjects from celebrity culture to media advocacy, and from preservation to cinematic events. This four-year program, administered by the Film Studies Department, begins with foundational courses introducing essential theories, concepts, and research methods in Film Studies, plus various analytical approaches for examining visual media history. These prepare students for specialized, advanced Honors-level coursework. The curriculum combines Film Studies with German language at a sophisticated, research-intensive level, fostering comprehension of knowledge creation and development. It cultivates independent scholarship characterized by curiosity, precision, and academic discipline. This 60-month course culminates in a Master of Arts (Honours) degree, following St Andrews' credit-based structure requiring 540 total credits (typically 120 annually). Initial years combine program-specific core modules with elective options (sometimes including cross-faculty courses), while later years focus on advanced, research-oriented specialization.
