As an MA (Hons) French student, you'll refine your language and communication abilities to advanced proficiency by exploring French and Francophone linguistics, literature, and cultural studies. The program offers research-focused specializations spanning medieval to contemporary literature, French political culture, performance studies, intellectual history, postcolonial theory, gender studies, film adaptation, modern French philosophy, creative writing, and translation studies. This four or five-year degree, administered by the School of Modern Languages, begins with foundational training in French language and cultural studies during the first two years, enhancing analytical reading, oral fluency, writing proficiency, and translation techniques. First-year students select two supplementary subjects alongside French, typically continuing with at least one into the second year. The third year presents optional study abroad opportunities at French partner institutions, with coursework completed overseas counting toward degree requirements. Alternatively, students may opt for an integrated year abroad followed by two Honours years. Advanced coursework emphasizes critical thinking and professional skills while examining contemporary Francophone discourse. Specialization options include political studies, cultural analysis, translation theory, creative composition, or literary studies from medieval to modern periods. St Andrews modern language graduates emerge with exceptional linguistic capabilities alongside deep intercultural understanding, complemented by transferable skills in analysis, synthesis, and cross-cultural communication that open diverse career pathways.
