The MA (Hons) in Ancient History delves into the civilizations of Greece and Rome, along with neighboring cultures like the Persians and Carthaginians. This program examines the era spanning from the emergence of Greek writing and urban development in the 8th century BCE to the fall of the western Roman empire in the 5th century CE. Geographically, the focus lies on the Mediterranean region, occasionally extending from the Persian Gulf to Scotland and from Crimea to the Sahara Desert. The curriculum addresses not just political and military history, but also explores themes including gender studies, ancient slavery, colonization processes, religious practices, cross-cultural interactions, and the ecological and economic systems of the classical world. Students will analyze ancient sources and investigate how Greek and Roman societies interpreted and reshaped their historical narratives.
During the Honours years (third and fourth year), students can specialize in diverse aspects of Greek and Roman history, examining social structures, economic systems, political institutions, and cultural developments from archaic Greece through the Roman imperial period. Each Honours module reflects the cutting-edge research of faculty members, introducing students to contemporary scholarly discussions. These courses explore various historical themes and methodologies, covering subjects like servitude, religious traditions, gender roles, military strategies, and imperial expansion.
