Our research expertise focuses primarily on regions of north-western Europe, the Balkans, and the Mediterranean, with particular emphasis on Italy. We adopt an interdisciplinary methodology in both research and teaching, with our medieval studies group including specialists in material culture analysis, osteological evidence (both human and animal), landscape archaeology, architectural studies, and the intersection between archaeology and textual sources.
Key research areas encompass medieval religious traditions and burial customs, population movements, cultural identity, gender studies, childhood in historical contexts, and dietary patterns. Faculty members are involved in extensive field projects and maintain collaborative relationships with heritage organizations throughout Europe, creating valuable opportunities for students to pursue research collaborations beyond campus and participate in professional placements. The medieval studies group also hosts a vibrant community of PhD candidates and postdoctoral scholars.
