Sheffield's multidisciplinary approach to landscape archaeology integrates viewpoints and techniques from biological and environmental sciences, ethnography, geography, geospatial technologies, heritage studies, and history. The department carries out research across numerous global locations with extensive collaboration networks, spanning the UK, Greece, Italy, France, Russia, Spain, South Africa, and Turkey. Their investigations cover vast historical periods enabled by landscape studies, from ancient hominin caves in South Africa to modern environmental activism sites in Britain. A key focus of their work examines how historical contexts actively influence present-day communities and their environments. The department provides internationally renowned master's programs in landscape studies, environmental archaeology, and cultural heritage, supported by a dynamic community of PhD researchers.
