The Department of Germanic Studies boasts a rich heritage of academic excellence in German, while also standing as a premier institution for Dutch Studies. Additionally, we're proud to host the globe's sole Centre for Luxembourg Studies.
Our faculty, language instructors, postgraduate tutors, and students create a dynamic academic community fostering an energetic research atmosphere. The department regularly hosts public research seminars and events, typically scheduled for Wednesdays at 4pm.
Our dedicated researchers double as passionate educators, translating their substantial publication records into research-driven course modules. Our collective expertise spans literature, cultural history, philosophical thought, and sociolinguistics, with growing emphasis on visual culture studies.
Geographically, we offer the most comprehensive coverage among UK German departments. Our scope extends beyond Germany, Austria, and Switzerland to include less commonly studied regions like Luxembourg and even Liechtenstein. While focusing on the Netherlands, we also examine Flanders and extend our gaze to post-colonial Dutch-speaking territories worldwide. Numerous faculty members operate multilingually, examining Germanic materials through comparative, international frameworks.
