Our funeral archaeology research group investigates the ceremonial practices societies have employed to mark the passage from life to death across history. We examine all elements of burial traditions, utilizing data from various sources such as human remains, grave goods, burial methods, memorial practices, monuments, and surrounding landscapes, while also incorporating historical documentation when available. Our work focuses on understanding how personal and collective identities were shaped and expressed in life and through death rituals, as well as the social relationships revealed by burial customs. Our expertise particularly covers the past thousand years, with special attention to childhood burial evidence and the ceremonial role of animals.
