The foundation year of this program offers students with non-traditional qualifications comprehensive academic preparation for successful undergraduate study in the School of English. After completing the foundation year, students will advance to the BA in English Language and Linguistics.
This preparatory year is thoughtfully structured to boost your confidence, cultivate key academic abilities, and deliver specialized subject knowledge crucial for achievement. You'll learn within the Department for Lifelong Learning, which brings nearly four decades of expertise in supporting mature students to realize their potential for degree-level success.

Have been out of formal full-time Level 3 education (usually A-Levels or Access courses) for 2 plus years
Have potential to succeed on your chosen course, evidenced by a combination of work, life and prior educational experience
Have an understanding and commitment to the subject-area of your chosen course
Be prepared for the demands that undergraduate degree level study will place upon you
Be 21 or over (see below for advice for younger applicants)
A minimum GCSE grade D/3 in Mathematics (or equivalent) may also be required. A GCSE grade C/4 may be required for some science programmes.
IELTS - Overall score of 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each component, TOEFL - Overall score of 80 with a minimum of 17 in Listening, 18 in Reading, 20 in Speaking and 17 in Writing, Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic, PTE Academic UKVI - Overall score of 56 with a minimum of 51 in each component.
