Through a combination of practical and theoretical approaches, the group aims to reveal how human aspirations and cultural influences shape scientific and technological practices, entrepreneurial innovations, and user interpretations.
Drawing on transdisciplinary methods, ongoing research addresses pressing issues across Film and Cinema Studies, Media Philosophy, Digital Media, History of Science and Technology, Media Anthropology, Design Theory, Interaction Design, and Human Cognition.
Transtechnology researchers conduct monthly public seminars. The 2018/2019 series adopted a 'slow conference' format titled Gravity, Epistemology, and Representation: A Weightless Exploration. Details are available on our Transtechnology website.
Transtechnology Research oversees the UK editorial office for Leonardo and manages the international operations for Leonardo Reviews and Leonardo Reviews Quarterly (LRQ).
Since 2006, the group has released the annual Transtechnology Research Reader as part of its Open Access Papers initiative.
Transtechnology Research spearheaded a three-year HERA JRP-funded project titled Humanities as a Source of Creativity and Innovation, partnering with VU University Amsterdam, the University of Applied Arts Vienna, the EYE Film Institute Netherlands, and The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision.
Transtechnology doctoral candidates receive funding through the Marie-Curie ITN CogNovo program and the 3D3 consortium. Past students have secured full doctoral grants from AHRC, EPSRC, the University of Plymouth, and Brazilian/Portuguese Research Councils.
Full-time duration: 3-4 years.
