Seize the chance to dedicate yourself to a self-directed research endeavor, either full-time or part-time, with personalized mentorship from one of our history faculty experts.

Our scholars maintain a distinguished legacy of globally acclaimed research achievements across social and cultural history, political and diplomatic studies, as well as military, maritime, and naval history. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, 97.6% of our History department's scholarly works (primarily publications and academic articles) were acknowledged as internationally significant for their impact, innovation, and scholarly rigor.

This flexible doctoral program caters to individuals with specific research inquiries, allowing for in-depth independent investigation to generate novel insights within the field. Those aiming for academic research careers will find this the ideal advanced research qualification.

For applicants without a master's degree, we offer alternative research-focused graduate programs such as our ResM History (which permits seamless progression to PhD studies for high-achieving students) or our MPhil degree. Additional information about our research degree options is available.

You'll receive dedicated support from a supervisory team led by a Director of Studies, while participating in professional development opportunities and presenting your findings in academic forums.

The PhD culminates in either a traditional written dissertation (approximately 80,000 words) or a hybrid submission combining scholarly analysis with creative/professional work, followed by an oral defense.

Full-time duration: 3-4 years.
