Our doctoral programs in History enable you to participate in existing research initiatives or pursue your own academic interests under the guidance of our expert faculty. You'll receive dedicated supervision from two advisors, with access to additional specialists when needed. Our supervisors possess extensive knowledge across historical disciplines, particularly in Labor history, British Imperial studies, regional history, gender studies, sexual identity, and racial dynamics in 19th-20th century Britain, along with Russian history, socioeconomic studies, consumer culture, and popular cultural evolution.

You'll benefit from a dynamic research atmosphere with robust connections to academic networks at Anglia Ruskin and beyond, including collaborations with Cambridge University's CRASSH (Centre for Research in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities). Our department houses the Labor History Research Unit (LHRU), which pioneers innovative perspectives on Labor history—both domestic and global—through academic forums, symposia, graduate programs, and research publications. We actively participate in numerous Faculty research collectives, including the StoryLab Research Institute.

Our program features regular departmental seminars and Faculty research events, offering opportunities to present your work in an encouraging academic environment. These gatherings, complemented by our digital platforms, facilitate interdisciplinary connections with fellow researchers. Your specialized studies will be strengthened by comprehensive university-wide training modules covering essential research competencies such as ethical considerations, academic presentation skills, intellectual property rights, and digital research methodologies.
