The PhD in Black Studies provides an academic space to explore the history, literature, and culture of Black communities (broadly defined) across North America, while also examining their historical, cultural, and political connections to Africa, Britain, and other global locations.

As Europe's sole program of this nature, it employs interdisciplinary approaches and critical analysis to examine the diverse experiences, cultural expressions, political engagements, artistic creations, historical narratives, and migratory patterns of African diaspora populations.

This program holds particular significance in the current UK context, where students, communities, and academic institutions are increasingly evaluating educational curricula in light of ongoing discussions about the impact and lived realities of the Black diaspora throughout the Atlantic world.
