Our PhD program in Latin American Cultural Studies offers the opportunity to conduct groundbreaking original research under expert academic guidance. The Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American Studies department at Manchester holds a prominent position in both national and international research circles through scholarly publications, seminar programs, conference participation, and our progressive approach to disciplinary boundaries. Our research and graduate teaching spans from Early Modern Spain and Latin America to contemporary topics (including studies of modern Latin American urban spaces, race and indigenous cultures, modern Iberian literature and media, and 20th-21st century Latin American literature and visual arts). Faculty expertise encompasses cultural and literary history, musicology, historical studies, and urban cultural analysis, with specializations in Brazilian/Portuguese Studies, Gender Studies, Film Studies, Latin American Art and Literature, and Textual Criticism. Recent PhD graduates have successfully completed projects across our full disciplinary spectrum, with particular concentrations in Latin American, Gender, and Cultural/Literary Studies. We maintain active research seminar series in both Spanish/Portuguese and Latin American Cultural Studies, with graduate students playing vital roles in organizing and contributing to these academic forums.
