About Physics at the University of Nottingham Our institution boasts a distinguished legacy of academic excellence and groundbreaking discoveries. The School of Physics and Astronomy gained global recognition when Professor Sir Peter Mansfield received the 2003 Nobel Prize for developing MRI scanners - technology that has benefited over 500 million people worldwide. Currently, our pioneering quantum technology research is revolutionizing the detection and treatment of neurological disorders by mapping brain activity. Our research spans the most advanced scientific frontiers, from exploring quantum phenomena at near-absolute zero temperatures to studying cosmic-scale structures in the universe. Career Prospects An advanced physics education cultivates exceptional problem-solving abilities and adaptability - highly sought-after skills across all professions. Graduates pursue diverse career paths in engineering, aerospace, information technology, finance, and academic research. Many leverage their strong communication skills to excel in education or science journalism roles. Notable employers of our alumni include Accenture, BBC, EDF Energy, Jaguar Land Rover, and NHS Trusts, with positions ranging from Trainee Clinical Scientist and Medical Physicist to Systems Engineer and Software Development Engineer. This specialized program will deepen your knowledge of theoretical astrophysics while equipping you with essential mathematical, computational, and analytical skills for professional success.
