If you're captivated by the interplay of mathematics, the universe, and scientific discovery, this MPhys program might be your ideal choice. This integrated Master's degree serves as the initial pathway to achieving Chartered Physicist status. Designed for students seeking an accredited program that prepares them for advanced studies or research positions in physics, it also equips graduates with essential knowledge, analytical abilities, and problem-solving expertise for careers in science, engineering, finance, or information technology.
Durham's physics programs provide exceptional flexibility. We offer four Institute of Physics-accredited options: MPhys degrees in Physics, Physics and Astronomy, and Theoretical Physics, along with a three-year BSc in Physics - all sharing the same foundational curriculum in the first year.
Depending on elective choices, students can transfer to another program until the conclusion of their second year. Additionally, you may opt for a year-long work placement or study abroad experience with one of our partner institutions, extending the program from four to five years or replacing the standard third year.
The initial year establishes crucial groundwork in physics theory, mathematical techniques, and laboratory competencies necessary for tackling advanced material in subsequent years. Beginning in Year 2, the curriculum places greater emphasis on astronomy and astrophysics.
As you advance through the program, coursework increasingly connects to practical applications through project-based learning and specialized electives aligned with your academic interests and career goals. Your education culminates with a research project addressing current scientific challenges and advanced modules that deepen your understanding of physics and astronomy.
