Our physics and astrophysics program offers a greater focus on astrophysics compared to similar degrees, guiding you through celestial bodies, galaxies, and the cosmos's beginnings. You'll receive hands-on training with our rooftop telescopes and join yearly excursions to an international observatory in the Canary Islands.
The University of Sheffield's BSc in Physics and Astrophysics provides more extensive astrophysics coverage than typical physics programs. While covering fundamental physics, half your studies will focus on topics ranging from solar system formation to galactic evolution and the universe's development.
Our facility features two rooftop telescopes accessible from your first year. Additionally, we operate a telescope in La Palma, Canary Islands, which students utilize during our annual research trip.
In your second year, you'll delve deeper into core physics concepts while specializing further in astrophysics through courses on stellar and galactic structures. To develop well-rounded scientific skills, you'll engage in practical telescope work and advance your programming abilities.
We foster the inquisitive spirit essential for exceptional astrophysicists by offering diverse third-year electives, including dark matter and nuclear astrophysics, alongside required cosmology studies.
Upon finishing your independent research project, you'll graduate fully equipped to pursue an outstanding career in astrophysics or related fields.
