Course introduction

English and Philosophy both examine and interpret human experience. The significant themes found in literature and discussions about language intersect with fundamental philosophical questions:

- What are the key conflicts, challenges, and dilemmas of human existence?
- How should we approach the ethical, social, and personal challenges that shape our lives?

Philosophy
You'll study classic subjects like ethics and philosophy of mind alongside contemporary fields such as environmental philosophy and social philosophy.

English
Our program encompasses all aspects of English studies - including language, literature, linguistics, and drama - spanning from Old English to contemporary works.

Assessment approach
Most modules typically combine essays and examinations. Depending on the course, instructors may also utilize weekly reading summaries, oral presentations, performance assessments, and online quizzes.

Qualification Requirements

A level – AAB, Required subjects: A in English literature or language (or combined) at A level. IB score - 32 Points overall or 665 in 3 Higher Level Certificates, IB requirements: 6 in Higher Level English. Consequently we treat all applicants with alternative qualifications (besides A-levels and the International Baccalaureate) on an individual basis, and we gladly accept students with a whole range of less conventional qualifications including: Access to HE Diploma, Advanced Diploma, BTEC HND/HNC, BTEC Extended Diploma. RQF BTEC Nationals - RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma - unfortunately we are unable to accept this qualification on its own due to the subject specific requirements at A Level, RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Diploma DDD + A in A Level English, RQF Level 3 BTEC National Diploma DD  plus A Level English grade A, RQF Level 3 BTEC National Extended Certificate D plus 2 A Levels grades AB including A in A Level English. Access to HE Diploma - Pass the Access to HE Diploma 45 credits at level 3, with distinction in 30 credits at Level 3 and 15 at Merit, 9 credits must be achieved at Distinction in English modules.  GCSE English - GCSE English grade 4 (C). Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) - If you have already achieved your EPQ at Grade A you will automatically be offered one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject. If you are still studying for your EPQ you will receive the standard course offer, with a condition of one grade lower in a non-mandatory A level subject if you achieve an A grade in your EPQ. IELTS 6.5 (no less than 6.0 in any element), TOEFL (iBT) 90 (minimum 19 in writing and listening, 20 in reading and 22 in speaking).
