Our four-year BA in Philosophy and History (including a foundation year) is designed to help you build subject expertise while enhancing your academic abilities. The foundation year (Year Zero) gives you comprehensive preparation for the subsequent three years of undergraduate study at Essex. For those interested, we also offer a five-year option that includes a study abroad opportunity in your fourth year.
Once you successfully complete Year Zero through our Essex Pathways Department, you'll advance to the School of Philosophical, Historical, and Interdisciplinary Studies to finish your degree.
This program delivers a broad yet rigorous foundation in philosophy and history. You'll explore how philosophy intersects with other disciplines—particularly social, political, cultural, and historical inquiry—while forging connections between these two fields. This interdisciplinary approach is supported by our departments' shared focus and dedication to cross-disciplinary learning.
Employers highly value graduates who can approach real-world challenges with logical, creative, and critical thinking.
Our alumni pursue diverse careers in fields such as law, public relations, project management, journalism, media, education, library sciences, civil service, finance, law enforcement, and even fashion design.
