Course introduction

Do you have a deep interest in language, literature, and culture while wanting to enhance your abilities in a globally useful language? This joint honors program offers the perfect chance to fully engage with both English language/literature and Hispanic Studies, dividing your time equally between these interconnected disciplines.

In the English portion, you'll explore modules spanning drama and performance, linguistics, literature from the Renaissance to modern times, and medieval studies. Our program ranks among the UK's top 20 for English studies (The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2024 and Complete University Guide 2024).

The Hispanic Studies component blends essential language training with cultural exploration of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking regions. Beginners receive intensive Spanish instruction to reach advanced proficiency, while students with prior Spanish knowledge will study Portuguese as a secondary language, potentially continuing through graduation. Cultural studies complement language learning with examinations of literature and history from these diverse regions.

A highlight is the mandatory year abroad, immersing you in Spanish-speaking environments. Portuguese learners may split time between Portugal and Brazil. Options include university study, teaching placements, or professional internships.

Graduates emerge with dual expertise in English and Spanish language/culture, plus Portuguese proficiency for advanced Spanish entrants. You'll master textual analysis and develop exceptional communication abilities.
