The Materials Department offers a comprehensive range of research and education in materials science, spanning from conceptual design and creation to practical application, preservation strategies, and commercial aspects. Our interdisciplinary research addresses significant, socially impactful material science topics, enabling us to serve both industrial and societal demands.

While our studies are categorized into eight primary research areas, many initiatives collaborate with experts across different departments, academic institutions, and commercial partners.
The Department boasts some of the UK's most advanced and creative imaging and analysis equipment - resources our team actively utilizes in their investigations. This research focuses on enhancing knowledge of sophisticated materials and their behavior through cutting-edge imaging and analysis methods, while simultaneously pushing the boundaries of these characterization technologies.
