The Department of Literature, Film, and Theatre Studies boasts a rich legacy of blending analytical and artistic pursuits, nurturing poets, authors, translators, playwrights, performers, as well as literary analysts, theater researchers, and cinema scholars. Our PhD in Film Studies (Creative Practice) builds upon this distinctive heritage, providing guidance across our faculty's diverse research specialties, encompassing avant-garde and mainstream filmmaking, international cinema, and cross-media studies.
This doctoral program presents two creative pathways: candidates may craft either a feature-length screenplay or comparable short scripts (80-120 pages, representing 80-100 minutes of screen time and approximately 30,000 words) with a 40,000-word analytical component. Alternatively, students may produce a feature film or equivalent short films (80-120 minutes runtime), accompanied by a 10,000-word script sample and 30,000-40,000-word critical analysis.
Our alumni have flourished in both creative industries and academic circles, with former department members now working as university professors, educators, publishing professionals, media editors, reporters, arts coordinators, theater directors, and language specialists.
