Our PhD/MPhil Bioinformatics program allows you to pursue a research initiative providing instruction in cutting-edge computational methods for investigating biological and biomedical sciences. Manchester stands as a premier hub for bioinformatics and computational biology, boasting one of the UK's largest academic communities in this field. Modern biology has evolved into a data-driven discipline, producing vast amounts of complex information that demands specialized computational skills for processing, analyzing, and storing data. These capabilities enable enhanced understanding of biological mechanisms and facilitate groundbreaking discoveries. Such expertise proves valuable across both research and clinical applications, from predicting gene functions in biological systems to advancing disease diagnosis and prognosis. This expansion has primarily been fueled by advancements in genomic and post-genomic technologies (such as next-generation sequencing and related 'omics' approaches), which produce massive datasets like those from the human 100,000 genomes initiative. To deepen insights into biological processes, health, and disease, these genomic findings can be combined with diverse data types including evolutionary patterns, molecular structures, environmental factors, text-mining results, and more.
