Our PhD in Music (Musicology) equips you to cultivate advanced historical and analytical capabilities, fostering independent thinking and technical mastery alongside original ideas. Departmental research concentrates on eight key areas, structured around themes that engage multiple faculty members. These scholars apply diverse methodologies and specialized knowledge to collaboratively address challenges within each thematic focus. Musicology and ethnomusicology candidates will complete an 80,000-word dissertation demonstrating rigorous, original research. You'll work with a dedicated research panel—including a primary supervisor, co-supervisor, and advisor—who will conduct regular progress reviews. As a postgraduate researcher, you'll actively contribute to departmental and university academic life through seminar participation and periodic research presentations.
