The Joint Honours in Film Studies offers comprehensive training in cinematic history and core theoretical frameworks for analyzing film, while allowing you to pursue specialized interests alongside your History degree. In Film Studies, you'll broaden your cinematic knowledge through structured courses and screenings featuring both classic and modern films from diverse global traditions. The program examines both mainstream and alternative cinema to deepen your appreciation of film's evolution and the critical discussions influencing contemporary filmmaking. Through detailed analysis, you'll explore cinema's relationship with social, cultural, and political issues, situating films within their historical contexts while considering modern debates and future directions for the medium. This program focuses on academic study rather than hands-on production. The History component provides one of the UK's most varied curricula, spanning nearly all historical periods from ancient Greece and Rome through medieval times to recent decades, with geographical coverage including Britain, Europe, America, Asia, and Africa. Our department offers multiple historical perspectives, from political and economic approaches to gender, social, cultural, and colonial studies. Manchester's rich historical environment serves as an ideal learning setting, with landmarks ranging from Peterloo protest sites to anti-slavery movement locations, and from ancient Roman forts to medieval architecture. You'll have access to exceptional local resources including Chetham's Library, The Museum of Science and Industry, The People's History Museum, and the Working Class Movement Library.
