The BA in Arabic and German is a four-year program featuring a year abroad split between a Middle Eastern nation and a German-speaking country. This program integrates mandatory language components for both languages, taught by native speakers, with optional specializations in business language, translation, and interpretation.
Additionally, you'll explore the culture, politics, history, literature, media, linguistics, and religion of these regions, developing the skills to thrive professionally and socially in both contexts.
Arabic
This program enables you to attain near-fluency in modern Arabic while examining the language within its cultural and historical framework.
You'll explore Arab culture and literature spanning from medieval times to contemporary works, while gaining insights into social and cultural developments across the Arab world.
The curriculum includes diverse cultural studies covering history, politics, literature, and visual arts of the Arab world, taught by experts in these disciplines.
The structured program allows for gradual skill development. Mastering modern Arabic provides access to classical Arabic texts, both religious and secular, and serves as a foundation for learning regional dialects.
German
Core German language instruction (available for both advanced and beginner students) is enhanced by studies in linguistics and various cultural and historical topics, using German-language materials to strengthen both language skills and cultural understanding.
German studies specializations include linguistics (historical and contemporary), literature, film studies, gender studies, modern cultural history, minority cultures, and Holocaust research.
The program maintains strong partnerships with the Goethe-Institut and Austrian Cultural Forum, which host diverse cultural events.
