Beyond practical skills, this program emphasizes cultivating a thorough and analytical historical perspective on popular music genres, cultures, and traditions. Hands-on components cover musical performance, composition, or innovative music technology—all optional—while other units examine popular music history or the business side of music. Electives include subjects like music psychology and multimedia applications (films and video games). You'll develop the ability to analyze popular music through historical, critical, sociological, and philosophical lenses.
First-year core modules provide an in-depth examination of the popular music industry's dynamics and a critical survey of 20th century popular music evolution—not just highlighting pivotal moments but also investigating their societal backgrounds and lasting cultural impacts.
During your second and final years, you'll delve deeper into specialized subjects, choosing to focus exclusively on Popular Music courses or maintaining the flexibility to explore modules from other disciplines. Advanced performance and music technology courses complement these specialized studies. The final year prioritizes specialization, featuring an extended independent project (which could be a research paper, music technology creation, or a comprehensive performance showcase).
