Epidemiology examines health and illness patterns within specific human and animal populations. The University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection and Global Health unites top medical, veterinary, and scientific experts from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences.
This field plays a crucial role in tracking disease origins, transmission patterns, and creating effective prevention strategies. At IGH, we investigate both infectious and non-infectious diseases affecting humans and animals, including diseases that cross between species.
Our human epidemiology studies encompass clinical and molecular research on various infections - including gastrointestinal, respiratory, insect-borne, and sexually-transmitted diseases - affecting adults and children across the UK, Europe, Africa, and Asia.
Animal epidemiology research primarily occurs at the Leahurst campus, where veterinary and medical specialists collaborate with statisticians, mathematicians, and scientists. Their work focuses on zoonotic pathogens, antimicrobial resistance, human behavior's role in disease spread, preventive measures, animal welfare improvements, and environmental impacts on disease transmission.
