Our dynamic and globally diverse department provides PhD supervision across key political disciplines including British Politics, Political Science, International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Political Theory.

Faculty specializations encompass numerous critical areas such as security and terrorism studies, gender and sexuality politics, health policy, environmental politics, electoral systems, conflict resolution, migration studies, international institutions, human rights issues, post-colonial studies, development politics, political communication, media studies, ethical frameworks, nationalist movements, citizenship debates, ideological systems, social inequality, religious diversity, democratic transitions, policy analysis, political economy, regional governance, and global institutions.

Our researchers investigate political phenomena worldwide, with projects spanning China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa, the Caucasus, and the Balkans. Regionally, we also conduct specialized studies on Scouse culture, Liverpool's political landscape, and Merseyside communities.

Qualification Requirements

Applications are welcome from suitably qualified candidates who wish to undertake research leading to a PhD in Politics on either a full- or part-time basis. We ordinarily expect candidates for entry to our PhD programme to hold an undergraduate degree in the First or 2:1 class (or international equivalent) and a postgraduate (MA/MSc) degree (of 65% or higher/international equivalent) in a relevant subject area from a UK or EU/overseas university.
