The English Department focuses its research on three key fields: literary studies, linguistics, and creative writing. We strive to build and strengthen collaborative relationships, especially with cultural institutions at local and national levels, to extend the reach of our scholarly work. Recognized globally for excellence, the School of English provides students with research-driven education spanning diverse literary traditions, cultivating essential analytical abilities, communication expertise, and intellectual flexibility valued across contemporary professions.

Through media collaborations, our scholars have pioneered influential cultural initiatives worldwide, making literature accessible to broader audiences. This leadership has earned four faculty members recognition as New Generation Thinkers. We further promote public engagement by disseminating research through prominent publications, shaping cultural discourse and creating dynamic frameworks for intellectual exploration and creative expression.

Several department scholars concentrate on Contemporary Literature intersecting with speculative fiction, ecological studies, visual culture, sequential art, travel narratives, and urban studies. Emphasizing gender and racial perspectives, we champion postcolonial literature and groundbreaking interdisciplinary creative projects with real-world applications (including mental health and sustainability), redefining literary education in the UK. The department houses the Literature and Science Hub (originally founded as the Poetry and Science Center in 2007) as part of its commitment to innovative scholarship.
