Earning your PhD with us offers more than just cutting-edge exploration of fundamental physics. You'll join our research teams as a full member, participating in major international collaborations while based at research facilities in the UK or abroad. Our program provides unique opportunities to investigate core physics concepts using advanced technologies while immersing yourself in a global scientific community.
Each year, we accept approximately 15 full-time PhD candidates into our program. The typical duration is 3-4 years, culminating in an original thesis submission and oral examination within one of these specialized areas:
Accelerator Science and Technology
Condensed Matter Physics
Nuclear Physics
Particle Physics
Your first year will include intensive courses taught by active researchers, equipping you with knowledge for cutting-edge international research.
The University Graduate School supplements this with training in research methodologies, presentation techniques, and transferable skills, complemented by Research Council-funded summer schools.
While benefiting from Liverpool's outstanding facilities, most PhD candidates spend 1-2 years at premier research centers across Europe, America, or Japan. Many present findings at global conferences and publish in scientific journals.
Successfully completing a PhD demands commitment, teamwork, and strong communication. The qualifications and competencies you'll develop will significantly enhance your career prospects.
