Explore our planet Earth: from natural disasters to valuable resources, tracing the evolution of life and the geological history of our world. No prior geology background is required, and this program can launch your career as a professional geologist in fields like petroleum, mining, engineering geology, and environmental consulting. You'll receive comprehensive, hands-on training in contemporary geology, with significant focus on fieldwork. The Geology MESci (Hons) program mirrors the first three years of the Geology BSc (Hons), with the fourth year offering advanced geological training.
During your first two years, you'll build foundational knowledge across all major geology disciplines. In year three, you'll conduct an independent field project and write a dissertation. Specialized modules for the four-year program cover volcanic activity, mineral resources, and research techniques, with field trips to Northern Spain and Tenerife in years three and four.
Your fourth year involves joining one of our research teams to complete a substantial geological study. This includes honing research and presentation skills through project proposals, literature reviews, academic papers, and conference-style presentations. Many projects achieve publication in international journals.
Opportunities exist for industry placements with leading organizations including Shell, BP, ExxonMobil, RioTinto, Anglo-American, the Environment Agency, and the British Geological Survey.
Numerous students secure valuable industry internships between their third and fourth years.
You'll customize your learning journey by selecting from diverse applied and theoretical modules. The program emphasizes field-based instruction to develop crucial skills in data interpretation, problem-solving, research methodologies, and effective reporting.
An optional semester abroad in Australia or New Zealand is available during year three.
Several programs in our School incorporate lab and field components, with fieldwork conducted in urban, coastal, and mountain settings. We welcome applications from students with disabilities and will implement reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to all program elements.
