Chemistry graduates play a central role in scientific advancement, driving innovation across some of the world's most vibrant industries. This MChem program, which integrates chemistry with pharmacology, serves as an excellent springboard for diverse career opportunities or PhD studies. Over four years, you'll gain comprehensive knowledge of advanced medicinal chemistry and pharmacology, preparing you for doctoral research in either field or a career in pharmaceuticals.
Our programs share a foundational chemistry curriculum, offering flexibility during the initial two years. While maintaining this core, this program dedicates approximately 25% of study time to pharmacology and biomedical sciences.
The first two years mirror the BSc Medicinal Chemistry (F1B2) program, featuring a structured curriculum of biomedical, biological sciences, and medicinal chemistry modules. This intensive foundation combines theoretical and practical learning to establish core competencies.
Recognizing varying mathematical backgrounds among incoming students - crucial for advanced chemistry study - we offer adaptable mathematics courses that let you develop skills at your own pace.
Third year continues with inorganic and organic chemistry components from the MChem Chemistry (F102) program, replacing physical chemistry with specialized pharmacology modules. Here, you'll apply chemical and pharmacological knowledge to pharmaceutical challenges, particularly in drug design and development.
The final year integrates cutting-edge chemistry and pharmacology concepts, featuring core modules in organic chemistry alongside specialized topics like drug metabolism, drug response, and cancer pharmacology.
Fourth-year emphasizes chemical research through an extensive medicinal chemistry project conducted within one of the department's research groups.
This program includes an optional year abroad between second and third years, extending the degree duration by one year. This opportunity allows students to study at partner universities, broadening both academic perspectives and cultural experiences.
