Our BSc (Hons) in Geography and Oceanography examines the Earth's systems by studying the dynamic relationships between land, oceans, and atmosphere. This program is ideal for those passionate about tackling pressing global challenges like climate shifts, increasing ocean levels, and environmental contamination. A comprehensive understanding of these complex problems requires examining all aspects of Earth's interconnected systems. The oceanography component focuses on current and projected climate scenarios, while the physical geography elements offer insights into climatic variations spanning millennia, providing crucial historical context for modern climate trends.
The curriculum encompasses fundamental principles of oceanography, physical geography, geology, and ecology, alongside essential training in information technology and communication. Students will engage in multiple fieldwork experiences during their studies, culminating in a comprehensive marine practical during their final year.
Field studies occur in diverse settings, from urban centers to coastal regions and mountain landscapes, including local marine areas and various UK locations.
As pioneers in interdisciplinary earth sciences, we were the first UK university to merge terrestrial, marine, and climatic studies into a single cohesive program. Our collaboration with the National Oceanography Centre on campus brings expert guest lectures and research project guidance from leading scientists.
Several programs within our School incorporate both laboratory and field components, with field studies conducted in urban, coastal, and alpine environments. We welcome applications from students with disabilities and will implement reasonable accommodations to ensure equal access to all program elements.
