The MA/MPhil/PhD programs are research-focused degrees designed for individuals seeking postgraduate qualifications through original educational research culminating in a thesis. While all three programs follow the same supervised independent research approach, they differ in research depth and originality, with requirements increasing from MA to PhD. This distinction is evident in both study duration and thesis length: a part-time MA by Research generally requires two years to complete a 25,000-word thesis, while a part-time PhD typically spans 5-6 years for an 80,000-word dissertation. Full-time students can generally complete their studies in approximately half the time.
The MA program may appeal to education professionals looking to investigate specific aspects of their teaching practice and establish themselves as research leaders in their schools or colleges. In contrast, the PhD program targets current or aspiring senior academic leaders, administrators in primary/secondary/higher education institutions, or those pursuing careers as university lecturers and researchers.
