This Professional Education PhD/MPhil program enables you to deeply explore a specialized aspect of higher education. You'll undertake original research or synthesize your existing publications to develop a distinctive analytical perspective. You'll have the opportunity to customize your academic journey within the Professional Education PhD/MPhil framework. Through focused investigation of a particular higher education topic, you'll create a substantial scholarly contribution and establish yourself as a specialist in your field. City's Learning Enhancement and Development (LEaD) serves as both a central support service and an academic department with an active research team. This framework empowers you to reach your highest academic potential.LEaD offers three doctoral pathways:Traditional PhD
This pathway emphasizes scholarly investigation requiring substantial and novel knowledge advancement. Typically centered on expanding academic understanding, it involves concentrated study within a specific scholarly domain. Upon completion, candidates submit a thesis ranging from 80,000 to 100,000 words.PhD by Prior Publication
Designed for established researchers with published works demonstrating original contributions to their field. Submission includes the published materials along with a 20,000-word synthesis document highlighting the original knowledge contribution.PhD by Prospective Publication
This option involves conducting empirical research projects similar to traditional PhD work, with outcomes published as peer-reviewed journal articles (typically as first author). The final submission combines these publications with an analytical commentary (40,000-80,000 words).
Program Duration:
Full-time: 2–4 years
Part-time: 3–7 years
PhD by prior publication: 1–2 years
You should normally be working in an area of professional education with a minimum of three years’ experience. This way you can draw upon your practice as well as your theory and use this programme of study to develop your practice. You are expected to have a good honours degree (normally no less than a second class honours degree from a UK University) in an appropriate subject and/or an MA or MSc or equivalent qualification. You should be able to demonstrate proficient use of oral and written English and demonstrate the aptitude and motivation to undertake a course of independent research at doctoral level. If you consider yourself to be a non-traditional student you may be considered if you can demonstrate substantial research or relevant professional experience/publication. 
An overall score of 7.0 in the English Language Testing System (IELTS) with a minimum of 6.5 in the reading and writing subtests. Other evidence of proficiency in the English language which satisfies the Board of Studies concerned (for those students who don't require a Tier 4 visa). TOEFL iBT in-person and Home Edition: 100 overall with no less than 23 in Listening, 24 in Reading and Writing, 25 in Speaking.
