The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology offers resources and an encouraging atmosphere for over 30 vibrant research teams, creating a unified scientific community with recognized expertise in four key areas of both fundamental and applied research. Our department includes an engaged teaching faculty, featuring dedicated teaching specialists who support undergraduate and graduate programs, primarily within the School of Biological Sciences. We also nurture a thriving population of doctoral candidates pursuing PhDs through original research. Beyond faculty and PhD students, we foster an inventive and collaborative workplace for post-doctoral researchers and support staff. Doctoral students undertake self-directed research projects with supervision, typically spanning 3.0-3.5 years full-time or 6.0-6.5 years part-time. An additional year (or remaining portion) may be used for thesis preparation. The dissertation should generally not surpass 50,000 words, must present novel findings, and include publication-worthy material. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral examination.
