The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology offers facilities and a collaborative atmosphere for over 30 energetic research teams, creating a unified scientific community with recognized expertise in four key areas of both fundamental and applied research. Our department includes an engaged teaching faculty, featuring dedicated teaching specialists, who play vital roles in undergraduate and graduate programs, especially within the School of Biological Sciences. We also nurture a thriving population of doctoral candidates pursuing PhD research. Beyond faculty and PhD students, we foster an innovative and encouraging workplace for postdoctoral researchers and support staff. Doctoral candidates undertake independent research projects with supervision, typically spanning 3-3.5 years full-time or 6-6.5 years part-time. An additional year (or remaining portion) may be used for thesis preparation. The dissertation, limited to 50,000 words, must present original findings of publishable standard. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral examination.
