The Department of Genetics and Genome Biology is globally recognized for its groundbreaking research in genetic principles. Our expertise spans genome diversity, evolutionary dynamics, and applying genetic approaches to pressing challenges like human health, forensic science, agricultural improvement, and antibiotic resistance. We take pride in our interdisciplinary methodology, highlighting genetics as a universal framework for studying organisms ranging from viruses and microbes to plants, insects, and humans. PhD candidates undertake self-directed research projects with faculty supervision, typically spanning 3-3.5 years (full-time) or 6-6.5 years (part-time). An additional year (or remaining period) may be allocated for thesis preparation. The dissertation, capped at 50,000 words, must offer novel insights and meet publication standards. Final degree conferral requires successful defense during an oral examination.
