The University of Leicester's Physics and Astronomy Department merges groundbreaking scientific discovery with exceptional educational standards in Physics. With over 50 years of pioneering research and robust collaborations with global industries and partners, Leicester's vibrant scientific community explores the vast mysteries of the cosmos, spearheads robotic missions to study our Solar System's planets, and enhances our understanding of Earth's delicate climate. Doctoral candidates undertake an autonomous research initiative mentored by an advisory panel. Typically, full-time students finish within 3.0-3.5 years, while part-time students have 6.0-6.5 years. An additional year (full-time) or up to a seventh year (part-time) may be allocated for thesis preparation. The dissertation, capped at 50,000 words, must present novel insights and research worthy of publication. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral viva voce examination.
