Among the most fascinating binary star systems are those with tight orbits, featuring a dense object like a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole that pulls material from its companion, often a white dwarf, brown dwarf, or main-sequence star. These dynamic duos, known as interacting binaries encompassing Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) and X-ray Binaries, produce some of space's most extraordinary events - including Type Ia Supernovae, brief Gamma-Ray bursts, rapidly spinning pulsars, and miniature quasar-like objects.
Entry requirements vary depending on what you study – some subjects require a masters degree, others ask for a good undergraduate degree (a 2:1 or a First).
