The University of Leicester's Modern Languages department ranks among the UK's premier institutions for language, translation, and cultural studies. Our curriculum encompasses the Francophone, Italian, and Hispanic linguistic and cultural spheres, alongside specialized Translation Studies through our dedicated Center for Translation and Interpreting. Additionally, we provide language courses for non-specialists via our Languages at Leicester extracurricular initiative. Doctoral candidates undertake self-directed research projects with support from academic supervisors. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time or 7 years for part-time students. Typically, active research (encompassing experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) spans 3-3.5 years full-time or 6-6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a 12-month writing-up period. The combined research and writing phases must not surpass the total registration limit. Theses, normally capped at 80,000 words, must demonstrate original scholarly contributions and include publishable-quality work. Final degree conferral requires successful defense of the thesis in an oral viva voce examination.
