Our adaptable course offerings allow you to study under distinguished scholars in a dynamic and welcoming setting. Featuring specialists whose expertise covers periods from medieval to contemporary times, with regional focus on Britain, Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, you'll consistently discover modules that spark your interest and satisfy your intellectual curiosity. Doctoral candidates undertake an autonomous research initiative with support from an advisory panel. The maximum enrollment duration before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students and 7 years for part-time students. Typically, active research (encompassing experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. Following active research, students may apply for a writing-up period lasting up to 12 months. The combined duration of active research and writing-up must not surpass the total registration limit. The dissertation should generally not exceed 80,000 words and must present original scholarly contributions with publishable-quality work. Finally, candidates must successfully defend their thesis in an oral examination to earn their degree.
