Historical research encompasses a broad spectrum of interests. Our department specializes in:
Medieval studies:
we focus on British, European, Mediterranean and Indian Ocean social, political, religious and cultural developments, with specific attention to gender studies, hagiography, medical history, crusades, commerce, economic developments and Islamic jurisprudence.
British and Irish studies:
our scholars concentrate on early modern belief systems and intellectual movements (including Scottish Enlightenment thought), sociopolitical developments, WWII research, Anglo-Irish relations, and global diplomacy.
European studies: key areas include Renaissance scholarship, early modern political thought, genocide research, Russian/Soviet studies, modern French, Spanish, German, Greek and Czech political/intellectual history, collective memory studies, and gender/sexuality research.
American history:
specializations cover revolutionary and early republic periods, Civil War studies, 19th-20th century US foreign policy, 20th century political developments, African-American studies including civil rights movements, and labor history.
African studies:
our expertise spans West, East and Southern Africa, with concentrations in intellectual traditions, environmental studies, comparative regional history, Islamic studies, urban development, publishing history, and nationalist/decolonization movements.
Asian studies:
we cover Middle Eastern, South Asian and East Asian history, with emphases on print culture/archival studies, intellectual traditions, diplomatic relations, economic theory, cultural exchanges, religious/philosophical traditions, and anti-colonial movements.
Latin American and Caribbean studies:
key research areas include slavery studies, colonial systems, race/gender/body histories, Indigenous studies, and material culture research.
