At Leicester, we inspire students to discover the joys of literary study within a vibrant community of dedicated faculty and eager learners. Our university boasts numerous English-focused societies and groups, offering a diverse schedule of social and extracurricular activities. Each year, we organize numerous public lectures, seminars, and conferences. Doctoral candidates undertake independent research projects with support from their supervisory teams. The maximum enrollment period before thesis submission is 4 years for full-time students and 7 years for part-time students. The active research phase (including experiments, lab work, fieldwork, and data gathering) typically spans 3 to 3.5 years full-time or 6 to 6.5 years part-time. After completing active research, students may apply for a writing-up period of up to one year. The combined duration of active research and writing-up must not surpass the maximum enrollment period. Theses should generally not exceed 80,000 words and must present original contributions to knowledge with publishable-quality work. Finally, candidates must successfully defend their thesis in a viva voce (oral) examination to earn their degree.
