Pursuing a research degree in the Faculty of Biological Sciences allows you to cultivate expertise as an autonomous investigator in your selected discipline. Guided by your principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll conduct pioneering investigations into specific biological challenges while joining an extensive research network employing cross-disciplinary methods to address contemporary scientific inquiries. During your doctoral studies, you'll not only enhance your specialized research capabilities but also acquire new skills through structured training initiatives, seminar participation, and conference engagements.
At Leeds, scholars are examining the architecture and operations of various macromolecular assemblies, including those participating in metabolic processes, cellular transport, and antibiotic resistance mechanisms. The three-dimensional configurations of biological compounds and their interactions form the foundation of most biological activities, making structural biology an essential methodology in modern scientific exploration. Our research focuses on deciphering the configurations of biomolecules like proteins, DNA, RNA, sugars, and fats, along with their combined formations. This field also investigates molecular dynamics, integrating concepts from molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, computational modeling, and simulation techniques.
