Pursuing a research degree in the Faculty of Biological Sciences allows you to cultivate expertise as an autonomous investigator in your selected discipline. Guided by your principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll engage in pioneering research addressing specific biological challenges while joining a vibrant academic community employing diverse methodologies to solve contemporary scientific problems. During your doctoral studies, you'll not only deepen your subject-specific expertise but also enhance your professional capabilities through structured training initiatives, seminar participation, and conference attendance.
The Faculty's plant science research at Leeds explores core biological processes in plants while confronting the worldwide imperative of ensuring food security through sustainable farming practices. Investigations are concentrated within the Centre for Plant Sciences, which brings together 14 faculty members from the Schools of Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology. Research projects span from examining cellular functions and genetic regulation in model organisms (Arabidopsis, Physcomitrella) to analyzing plant-microbe ecological relationships and root-soil dynamics, as well as devising innovative approaches to mitigate environmental stresses and pest damage in various agricultural crops.
