Pursuing a research degree in the Faculty of Biological Sciences allows you to cultivate expertise as an autonomous researcher in your selected discipline. Guided by your principal supervisor and additional co-supervisors, you'll engage in pioneering investigations into specific biological challenges while joining a vibrant research network employing diverse methodologies to address contemporary scientific inquiries. During your PhD journey, you'll not only deepen your subject-specific expertise but also enhance your capabilities through structured training initiatives, seminar participation, and conference engagements.
The Faculty's plant science research at Leeds explores core biological processes in plants while confronting the worldwide imperative of ensuring food security through sustainable farming practices. Investigations are concentrated within the Centre for Plant Sciences, comprising 14 faculty members from the Schools of Biology and Molecular and Cellular Biology. Research spans fundamental cellular processes and genetic regulation in model organisms (Arabidopsis, Physcomitrella) to ecological studies of plant-microbe relationships and soil-root dynamics, along with innovative approaches for mitigating environmental stresses and pest damage in various agricultural crops.
