Pursuing a PhD in the School of Languages, Cultures and Societies will establish you as an authority in your chosen field while cultivating advanced research capabilities. These skills will equip you for both specialized career opportunities and future academic investigations. As a doctoral candidate, you'll undertake original research under faculty supervision, with scheduled progress reviews and a tailored training program to ensure you develop the necessary competencies for your study.

Our academic work initially focused on recording the five Modern South Arabian languages used in Oman and Yemen. The team has preserved over 200 hours of audio/visual materials in SOAS's ELAR archive. Current investigations examine the phonetic and phonological characteristics of Mehri and Shehret, along with studying nonverbal communication patterns in these languages.
