Research in the Italian subject group prioritizes modern approaches, featuring interdisciplinary and collaborative work that explores often-overlooked areas of Italian Studies. The addition of a specialist in Italian history has strengthened the transnational perspective of Italian Studies at Liverpool. The University of Liverpool's expertise in this field supports diverse research projects, from analyzing the social significance of language practices and cognitive studies of fiction and film to Postcolonial Studies and Oral History. Our flexible methodologies enable us to support both interdisciplinary and data-driven initiatives.
Italian Studies supervision covers sociolinguistics (including linguistic landscapes, minority languages, migrant languages, neo-plurilingualism, language policy, and social dialectology), the sociolinguistics of dubbing and subtitling, Italian film and audiovisual studies, crime fiction, cinematic adaptations of contemporary literature, Italian media, popular culture, and social and cultural history.
We especially encourage research proposals aligned with our faculty's expertise, such as linguistic landscapes, minority languages, language policy, crime fiction, cinema and media, cultural history, and postcolonial studies.
